Ride of Silence

Monday, April 26th, 2010
May 19, 2010
7:00 pm

From Fountain Square Park

Cyclists all over the globe will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The criteria for the Ride of Silence is a pace no faster than 12miles per hour for 8-12 miles and to remain silent during the ride.  The goal of the ride is to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials of cyclist’s right to the public roadways and to show respect for those who have been killed or injured while cycling.

Everyone is invited to ride. There is no fee, but helmets are required to participate. Since the ride will take place at 7:00 PM, there is a good chance we will finish in the dark. To ride at night, you need a white front headlamp and a red rear reflector. A red rear light is also highly recommended.

64th Adairville Strawberry Festival Ride

Saturday, April 24th, 2010
May 15, 2010

Meredith Johnson will lead us on a ride to his old hometown of Adairville, for their Annual Strawberry Festival. We will leave from Basil Griffin Park (Ampitheatre Parking Lot, Smallhouse Road Entrance) at 9:00am and take a leisurely cruise to Adairville, where we eat lunch on the square. There are many vendors that sell BBQ and such. And, the highlight of the meal is your choice of strawberry ice cream and / or strawberry shortcake!

The ride (but not lunch) is free and open to everyone. Non-members will be asked to sign a liability waiver for our insurance.

The total ride distance is 81 miles, and although long, the route is flat. We will go out through Middleton and come back through Franklin. You can find a route map on bikely.com or download one in PDF format.

Contact Meredith Johnson for more information.

Dogs and Other Problems

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Have you been harassed by a dog while riding your bike in Warren County? Even though there isn’t a leash law, dogs aren’t allowed to be a nuisance. If you’ve had a problem while riding, the Warren County Sheriff’s Department wants to know about it.

BGLOB member, Meredith Johnson, has been working with the Sheriff’s Department on these issues and has offered to be our liaison in reporting them. Simply fill out an incident form and send it to Meredith. If you’ve been injured or had an otherwise serious incident, don’t wait around on us. Contact the Sheriff’s Department (or 911 in an emergency) to have them come directly out to the accident scene.

Download the form in either Word or PDF format. You can also use this form for other types of harassment you might experience on a bicycle, including verbal or physical abuse from pedestrians or vehicles.
